Last meeting re-iteration - dimensionality

Casper reiterated what he had written down on the last meeting. Luca: Why do we consider everything with 3 dimensions and above a “crystal” and not 2 dimensions? Saulius answers, explaining we need higher dimensions for quasi-crystals and more. We have decided that we keep close to the IUCr definition of a crystal, dimension-wise, and say a periodic system with periodicity in 3 or more dimensions is a “crystal”. If it has lower dimensions of periodicity it is a “periodic system”.

Naming - Crystalline / Crystal

Monocrystalline. Polycrystalline. Mono-crystalline materials model that infers the (asymmetric) unit cell.

“Crystal” should be able to contain definitions of a mono-crystal, poly-crystal (a single entity/material with several crystals embedded in it). “Crystalline” should represent the model/symbolic.

Emanuele: Declare that the properties are being assigned through a procedure (semiosis). Unit cell would be a nominal/assigned property.

Emanuele: Procedural suggestion: Find 2-3 fundamental definitions from the dictionary of IUCr. Unit cell, crystal, crystalline. Discuss them and try to place them in the ontology. The ontology here being the EMMO that Emanuele showed parts of in the last meeting, where we tried to place “Crystal”.
