Some details in my StackOverflow Q&A, but it appears the current Infinispan instructions either don't account for or don't warn about the default cluster setup, which wants TLS communication.

I had to explicitly create a new cluster with

  security:
    endpointEncryption:
      type: None

or both the client and server complained of communication problems.

Infinispan server logged:
