Paper(s) about Surrogates.jl?

There are various references in commit messages and the docs and such about "paper" and "the original papers" that seem to suggest there are more than zero papers specifically about this package. If so, can you provide the citation(s), please? Thanks!

The old issues have the papers in them. We should convert them into docstrings.

Also, there isn't a paper on Surrogates.jl itself right now, though I hope there will be enough completed over the summer that we can then put a manuscript out on the package.
