When I tried setting up a workshop site from this template, at first the site wasn't generating. I was able to solve this by:

Going to my templated/checked out workshop project in GitHub
Going to Settings -> Pages
Under 'Build and deployment', setting Branch from ’None’ to ‘gh-pages`

We should add a note on this, maybe in the Readme under item 5 or 6 in 'Creating a Repository', or in _extras/faq.md

It loks like GitHub has changed default behavior on August 8.
