BN is a unique identifier for businesses or legal entities in Canada. It is a nine-digit number. Sometimes two letters and four digits can be attached to the business number to designate a federal program account. A business number can be retrieved by querying the Directories of Canadian companies (https://www.canada.ca/en/services/business/research/directories)

Asking the BN is one additional means of ensuring that we the legal name provided is accurate (and distinct from that of the venue, if applicable). Retrieving a BN forces the user to consult corporate documents or to query a directory.
