It would be nice to be able to use editor.tokenColorCustomizations and textMateRules to color these differently, similar to how VS allows.

This is not possible at the moment in VSCode at all. It depend on semantic/language-aware colorization that is currently only a stretch goal in their roadmap for 2018.
