Hello,

Select2 Widget 'allowClear' => true only works if a placeholder is set, otherwise x to clear will not be render. It works well with a placeholder message.

Yes that's correct... that's a prerequisite and inbuilt behavior for the core select2 plugin - you must set a placeholder when you want to use allowClear property.
