Make all tools easier to use with a simple, clean user interface. This issue is meant to be a starting point for more specific issues to be created. All tools should be easy to use in that instructions shouldn't be necessary. While instructions may not be necessary, each tool should try to incorporate a way to easily access instructions.

To avoid confusion, only show the most relevant / important information and move everything else into a dialog / bottom sheet. Ex. only show sunrise / sunset times and move noon, dawn, dusk, etc into a more details dialog. I want to be sure not to remove anything, just limit what is shown at a glance. Create UI mockups where possible and attach them to the issues so feedback can be provided.

Simple design inspiration:

  • Apple
  • Skiff
  • 1Password
  • DarkSky

Some background on why I believe this is necessary: I regularly get a lot of support tickets around how to use certain tools or Trail Sense being confusing / having too much information. Given the primary use cases (https://github.com/kylecorry31/Trail-Sense/wiki/Use-Cases), Trail Sense should be refocused to better support the average hiker and be much more informative at a glance. I know there are also a lot of users who like the technical/advanced details, so I won't be removing that - just making it less prominent in the UI to avoid visual clutter and potentially confusing information.

An example of the visual clutter is on the astronomy tool. Most users are visiting it to see when the sunset time is - but you have to dig through a bunch of different list items to find that, such as noon times or moon information. An example of confusing values is the weather tool. Most users just want to know what Trail Sense thinks the weather is going to be - and probably don't have an understanding of pressure (pressure, tendency, system, fronts) and likely don't care to see those values. Making this information less prominent will help avoid some confusion (a common ticket is around the weather front saying it is going to be cold / warm - people are confusing that with temperature).

Ordered by redesign importance (combination of what I've noticed, tickets, and usefulness):

  1. Redesign: Astronomy #1794
  2. Redesign: Clinometer #1994
  3. Beacons (creation)
  4. Redesign: Weather #1795
  5. Redesign: Navigation #1796
  6. Pedometer
  7. Redesign: Triangulation #1966
  8. Temperature Estimation
  9. Water Boil Timer
  10. Battery
  11. Solar Panel Aligner (and re-enable when no compass)
  12. Redesign: Light meter #2077
  13. Packing list
