Has this project been abandoned?

While I appreciate the Lato font and its design, it seems that @twardoch hasn't been working much on Lato lately and seems to be working on other projects. This font has quite a few notable uses, like magazines and LEGO. Just recently I saw it used on a climate plan from the New Zealand Government (look here, the heading font is Sorkin Type's Merriweather, also a Google Font), and I'm sure many people have been anticipating the variable release of version 3.x as font files. I myself have built those font files and released the result as applecuckoo/lato-builds. The update on Google Fonts has also not moved forward, it is now November as I'm posting this, almost half a year after Adam's promised ETA in June.
