Code of Conduct

Our Pledge

We, the Odestry community, pledge to create an open, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants in our Shopify-focused ecosystem. We are builders, developers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts united by our passion for creating better commerce solutions. We commit to fostering a space where everyone, regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and orientation, can participate freely and safely.

Our Standards

Encouraged Behaviors

To cultivate a positive and growth-oriented community, we encourage the following behaviors:

  1. Using welcoming and inclusive language
  2. Respecting diverse viewpoints and experiences
  3. Gracefully accepting and providing constructive feedback
  4. Focusing on what's best for the community
  5. Showing empathy and support towards fellow community members
  6. Asking detailed, well-formed questions and providing helpful answers
  7. Sharing knowledge, experiences, and resources to help others grow
  8. Using appropriate channels and threads for discussions
  9. Seeking permission before sending direct messages to other members
  10. Acknowledging and learning from mistakes
  11. Being patient with newer members and those learning new skills
  12. Celebrating diversity and the unique contributions of all members
  13. Promoting collaboration and knowledge-sharing
  14. Respecting intellectual property rights and giving credit where it's due
  15. Advocating for inclusivity and accessibility in projects and discussions

Unacceptable Behaviors

The following behaviors are considered unacceptable within our community:

  1. Use of sexualized language or imagery, and unwelcome sexual attention or advances
  2. Trolling, insulting comments, personal or political attacks
  3. Public or private harassment
  4. Publishing others' private information without explicit permission (doxing)
  5. Spam or off-topic messages across multiple channels
  6. Any conduct inappropriate for a professional setting
  7. Disrespectful or offensive language
  8. Unsolicited direct messages or excessive pinging of other members
  9. Discrimination in any form
  10. Intimidation or bullying behavior
  11. Advocating for or encouraging any of the above behaviors
  12. Sustained disruption of community events or discussions
  13. Impersonating a community member or staff
  14. Violating the terms of service of the platforms we use (GitHub, Discord, etc.)
  15. Deliberately spreading misinformation or unverified rumors

Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to all Odestry community spaces and interactions, including but not limited to:

  • GitHub repositories, issues, pull requests, and discussions
  • Discord server, channels, and direct messages related to Odestry
  • Official website, forums, and blog comments
  • Social media accounts associated with Odestry
  • Email communications with official Odestry addresses
  • Video calls, webinars, and online events
  • In-person meetups, conferences, and events where Odestry is represented
  • Any other online or offline space where community members are representing Odestry

This Code of Conduct also applies to actions taken outside of these spaces that have a negative impact on the community.

Enforcement

Reporting

Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be reported by contacting the Odestry team at [email protected]. All complaints will be reviewed and investigated promptly and fairly.

The Odestry team is obligated to maintain confidentiality regarding the reporter of an incident. Anonymous reports will be accepted but may limit our ability to investigate and respond.

Enforcement Process

  1. Acknowledgment: We will acknowledge receipt of the report within 24 hours.
  2. Investigation: We will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
  3. Decision: Based on the investigation, we will decide on an appropriate course of action.
  4. Response: We will communicate our decision to all relevant parties.

Enforcement Actions

Depending on the severity and circumstances of the violation, actions taken may include:

  1. A verbal or written warning
  2. Temporary suspension from community spaces
  3. Permanent removal from the community
  4. Public or private reprimand
  5. Requiring a public or private apology
  6. Requiring specific non-harassing behavior as a condition for continued participation

In cases of ongoing harassment or particularly egregious behavior, we may choose to publicly name the individual(s) responsible, in order to protect our community members.

Community moderators who do not follow or enforce the Code of Conduct in good faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other members of the community's leadership.

Guidelines for Positive Engagement

To make the most of our community:

  1. Stay on topic: Keep discussions relevant to Shopify development, entrepreneurship, and commerce solutions.
  2. Be specific when seeking help: Provide detailed information about your issue, including error messages, API versions, and tech stack when applicable.
  3. Use threads: Utilize threads to keep related discussions connected and easy to browse.
  4. Share your expertise: Don't hesitate to share your knowledge, experiences, and insights with others.
  5. Network responsibly: While we encourage networking, always ask for permission before sending direct messages to other members.
  6. Celebrate achievements: Share your accomplishments, but be mindful not to spam the community.
  7. Be patient and understanding: Remember that our community includes members of all skill levels and backgrounds.
  8. Respect privacy: Do not share personal or sensitive information about others without their explicit consent.
  9. Cite sources: When sharing information, provide sources when possible to help others learn and verify information.
  10. Be open to feedback: Accept feedback graciously and be willing to learn from others.
  11. Support inclusivity: Use inclusive language and be mindful of potential cultural differences.
  12. Resolve conflicts constructively: If disagreements arise, focus on the ideas rather than attacking individuals.

Commitment to Open Source

As an open-source community, we are committed to:

  1. Maintaining transparent processes and decision-making
  2. Encouraging contribution from members of all skill levels
  3. Providing mentorship and support for new contributors
  4. Respecting and adhering to open-source licenses
  5. Giving proper attribution for contributions
  6. Fostering innovation and collaboration in our projects

Data Privacy and Security

We are committed to protecting the privacy and security of our community members. We will:

  1. Only collect and use personal data as necessary for community operations
  2. Be transparent about data collection and use
  3. Provide options for members to control their data
  4. Take reasonable measures to protect community data from unauthorized access or breaches

Amendments and Updates

This Code of Conduct is a living document and may be updated from time to time. Major changes will be communicated to the community, and members will be given an opportunity to provide feedback before changes are finalized.

Attribution

This Code of Conduct is adapted from the Contributor Covenant, version 2.0, and incorporates elements specific to the Odestry community.
