Update script to use installed JVM, if there is an appropriate one

Different Linux distributions have a variety of ways of installing Java, locations it may be installed, and methods of detecting it. We should take advantage of the latter, where possible, to avoid the need to download another JVM. It should not be too difficult to cover the most common Linux distributions and Mac OS.
