CORS issues in production stopping communication between frontend and server

I thought I could deal with CORS in a url-agnostic way but it doesn't seem to be working.

I could fix it by explicitly stating the url but was hoping for a more flexible approach (partly for learning, partly because I didn't want to hardcode the url in the code).
