I'm also collecting some datasets and using similar yaml syntax. maybe there is a possibliity to collaborate...
Your resources/recipes seem more geared towards volume than specificity...

My big fail on documenting the design. My goal was a tool to find and download datasets with a very lightweight api to load the file contents.

Not actually assuming anything about the datasets itself as the other libs.
