Is it possible to create an ubuntu / debian package or push to canonical repo ?

Great but not last version for LTS ubuntu (Xenial 16.04)

You can create or maybe ask for a backport; not sure how it works in Ubuntu. Or actually, just add zesty or artful in your sources.list and do pining (see man apt_preferences); backup-manager has very few dependencies, so I think it would work just fine.
