Thanks Chris,
I hope to make a YouTube video soon to describe Quick_Say20, its layout,
and its peculiarities. It did take a long time to make what you see so far
- months in fact. I have definitely gained a great deal of respect for
those who design grid based language models like Word Power or Proloquo2Go.
There were many design choices, trade-offs, and start-overs to get to this
point. I would be delighted and honored to see QS20 to be included as a
standard grid.

I asked our friends at ARASAAC for a review.
I think we could include this as one of the standard grids in the startup
menu!

Wow, that's amazing! Thanks for all of your work! 👍 Please just tell me what you want to have written in these fields: I assume "Quick Say 20" and "Jim Luther" for name and author - if you want you can also provide a link to a page about you or your organization that is linked with the name of the author. Great that you've tried to implement correct word forms although still not supported by AsTeRICS Grid. But be sure that your great ideas from #254 are not forgotten and I hope I'll be able to implement it at some time. I've applied for a personal funding for AsTeRICS Grid and if I get it, I also plan to implement a community platform, where people can share grid configurations like yours independently and also search and import them within the app. Edit: please also tell me which version should be published, I assume |

Thanks Benjamin,
I have updated QS20 in the meantime with a few additions/changes:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14TTlBXqvAQ9Kxg2qib7ofqCaBMV8fIR5?usp=sharing
Here is what I would like:
Quick_Say20: A 20 element, English language language model for AsTeRICS Grid
Author: Jim Luther ***@***.***
Quick_Say20 is meant to provide grammatically correct, flexible,
conversational ability that is as efficient as possible in a 4 row, 5
column format that is usable on a small tablet or phone. I positioned the
most commonly used words close to the home page, prioritizing core
language. Quick_Say20 may be a good choice for users who already have some
grammar and literacy skills.

Of course we should add it to the default grid configurations.
Please just tell me what you want to have written in these fields:

I've just added your QuickSay20 to a new release, see https://github.com/asterics/AsTeRICS-Grid/releases/tag/release-2023-08-31-15.27%2F%2B0200 I've did some clean-ups of your configuration:
For the link at the author, I've added your github profile, since we currently only can add websites, not mail addresses. Please test and tell me if everything is fine. |

I think it looks really good. I did not do any grid housekeeping, and I
think I discovered another extra, unnecessary grid: "Template_toLast(Copy)"
Sometimes I forget to rename the grid after I have cloned it, then I get
interrupted, then the grid becomes orphaned.
I hope others find this grid set helpful.
Thanks so much,
jl

I've did some clean-ups of your configuration:
- removed grids named "empty grid" (default start grid)
- removed grids named "global grid" (grids that originated from some
bug from global grid, the current global grid isn't shown in the grid list)
- updated all thumbnails of the configuration in order to have them
all in the same size
- removed dictionaries of the configuration - we don't want to have
them included by default, because it needs much storage space in user's
configurations we have to save in our database. So users should import
dictionaries by themselves, if they need them.
Looks like this:

I made Quick_Say20 because I thought more grid sets should be available for AsTeRICS Grid so that users can communicate right away, and therapists have a good place to start.
Quick_Say20 may be a good choice for users who already have some grammar and literacy skills.
Here is a link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yeLU0OVztHPG_FyQwwbOw906r1xOG2dR/view?usp=sharing
Here is a link to the folder with an updated version of Quick_Say20 in it:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14TTlBXqvAQ9Kxg2qib7ofqCaBMV8fIR5?usp=sharing
(I removed a couple of images that may have had copyright protections. I also made some other minor changes.)
I chose a 20 element grid to make it easier to use on a small tablet, or even a phone. I positioned commonly used words close to the home page, prioritizing core language words.
I wanted the result to provide users with conversational ability that was grammatical, flexible, and as efficient as possible.
I am not sure how successful I have been, but Quick_Say20 is usable, and sometimes is surprisingly efficient, and sometimes is not.
Notes on Grid Layout:
Words within many grids are mostly in alphabetical order, But in sets of linked grids - like verbs - the grids themselves are linked according to the most commonly used words first based on my not-so-deep research.
Because AG does not currently provide support for accessing various word forms in English, like singular/plural nouns, verb variations, adjective variations, each word variation has to be put in a grid somewhere. I’ve provided grids for the most common verb forms, and a few irregular verbs. In general, if you chose I or You, or another pronoun you will link to the correct from of a present tense verb. An alternate verb button on the home page (Makes/Making/Made Happen) allows you to select other verb forms in grids that are congruent to the present tense verbs. There are also some helping verbs and a few irregular verbs found in this alternate verb grid. In addition, there is a link to a set of verb grids that are categorized by context: Games/Leisure, School, Sports, Work. This was kind of an experiment, and I am not sure how well it works, but each grid in this subset has direct links to the various verb forms.
The “Small words” button links to the most common small words, and the “Small words” button appears throughout the grid set as a convenience to reduce linking back to the Home page.
If you want to use the words: who, what, where, when, which - they are found via the “Question starters” button along with auxiliary verbs, and some forms of the verb to be.
The “Punctuation” button provides for just that. It also has a link to some keyboard pages with word prediction.
“Joining words” are words like: but, although, because, and, or, since.
“Hello/Goodbye” links to common greetings, social niceties, and yes, no.
Quick_Say20 has around 160 grids, making word finding often a problem - even for me.
I did, however, discover a simple method for finding words. AG does not currently offer a word finding feature, but does allow you to save your grid set as a PDF file that includes links. If you open the PDF file in a neighboring tab using the Chrome browser, you can use the “find” feature from the Chrome 3-dot menu to locate which elements on which grids have the word you are looking for. I found that the PDF method for finding words works in all the major browsers on Windows.
I have tried to anticipate linking based on common sentence word flow, but this is only partially successful. When it works it really speeds things along. When it doesn’t, it doesn’t.
Quick_Say20 is a work in progress with lots of room for improvement. Please feel free to make suggestions, and modify or extend the grid set to suit your needs. If you make any improvements, please share them with me.
Thanks,
Jim Luther
