How to find the nearest runestone in Sweden

The Swedish National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet in Swedish) provides a database for archaeological sites and monuments. (About the database).

Alternative 1: Draw the search area in the map

  1. Go to https://app.raa.se/open/fornsok/
  2. Zoom into the map to the location where you are located (assuming you are now in Sweden).
  3. Click SÖK in the upper right corner.
  4. Click Sök lämning
  5. Click rita geografiskt område
  6. If a popup message with the text Zooma in mer i kartan för att aktivera ritfunktionen appears, you need to zoom in more.
  7. The left side menu now disappears. Under the mouse pointer you will see a black circle. Move the mouse pointer and click the corners of a polygon, that will be defining the area where you want to search for runestones. Click again the starting point (the first polygon corner). Now the green button KLAR gets enabled. Click the green button KLAR. The left side menu now reappaers.
  8. In the drop-down list Filtrera på kategori, choose Ristningar, hällmålningar och minnesmärken.
  9. In the drop-down list Lämningstyp, choose Runristning.
  10. In the drop-down list Egenskaper, choose Belägenhet: Runsten.
  11. Click the green button SÖK.
  12. Your search results are now displayed. The runestones are displayed on the map as circles in blue-green color (cyan) with the letter R in the middle. The runestones are also listed as text entries in the left side menu.

Alternative 2: Write the name of the search area

The possible types of area names are:

  • County (län in Swedish). There are 21 one of them in Sweden.
  • Municipality (kommun in Swedish). There are 290 of them in Sweden.
  • Province (landskap in Swedish). There are 25 of them in Sweden.
  • Socken.
  1. Go to https://app.raa.se/open/fornsok/
  2. Click SÖK in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Sök lämning
  4. In the text field Ange geografiskt område, write the name of the area.
  5. In the drop-down list Filtrera på kategori, choose Ristningar, hällmålningar och minnesmärken.
  6. In the drop-down list Lämningstyp, choose Runristning.
  7. In the drop-down list Egenskaper, choose Belägenhet: Runsten.
  8. Click the green button SÖK.
  9. Your search results are now displayed. The runestones are displayed on the map as circles in blue-green color (cyan) with the letter R in the middle. The runestones are also listed as text entries in the left side menu.
