My Experimentation with Docker

I host a domain as a hobby and like to experiment... Currently I use Docker Ubuntu 22.04 VirtualBox VM in Windows. I tried to use Docker in WSL but I gave up quickly due to network configure difficulties... Maybe some day I'll set up a dedicated Linux machine to host these services.

Generally I try to run Docker containers as other than root UID:GID because I want to access the data (Backed up images, TVH recordings etc.) from Windows using VirtualBox Shared Folder functionality. This introduces some ownership problems... If a docker image uses other UID:GID, data needs to be stored inside VM filesystem, which makes it more cumbersome to access.

Note. In order to use GMail account to send e-mail notifications from NextCloud and WatchTower, Google App Passwords needs to be created.

Running in (remote) context

Docker supports running docker on other contexts. For example SSH connection can be used to run dockers in a remote machine. Remote machine can be anything that has SSH access and can run docker. An example setup can be done using free tier of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Note. When running docker containers in other context, files and mounted volumes must be available in that context.

Note. On WSL running docker compose --context <remote> up -d output an error:

docker.errors.DockerException: Install paramiko package to enable ssh:// support

Needed to install additional packages:

sudo apt install python3-pip
pip3 install paramiko

Keeps all docker images up to date

Dockerized React app

Contains files needed for dockerizing a react app:

To create and build an example React app, execute following commands in the root of this repository

npx create-react-app <react-app>

Copy files required for dockerization into created React app folder

cp -rT react-docker <react-app>
cd <react-app>
