In order to limit the number of representations of the same thing, suggest limiting the location type (loc_type) in the location table to open street map map feature names...or at least strongly suggest using them.

The osm list is quite long, and occasionally has two ways of representing the same thing. We can certainly recommend consulting osm, with a focus on https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features#Other_highway_features, (e.g. bus_stop) and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:amenity#Transportation

OSM at least provides a consistent "set" and a starting place.

I suggest creating our own location type codes in addition or perhaps add another attribute: activity_location for potential use with say activitysim. In such a case a location would be associated with an activity set (codes) that represent activities allowed at the location for use in stop/destination choice.
