Testing Agenda

The purpose of gathering research from individuals within our target audience is to gather an in-depth idea of what features users need from the Travel Pack. Questions that will be asked centre around what difficulties participants faced when travelling and the solutions they used to remedy these struggles.

The testing method utilised will be a simple in-situ interview style. This method will be the most effective as it will allow participants to elaborate on their answers and also allow the interviewer to ask further questions based on responses. For participants that are unable to be interviewed in person (for example: if they are currently overseas, too busy to meet, etc.), a chat system will be utilised to imitate the interview style. If a chat system is not feasible, all of the questions will be sent to the participant via email. As email responses can be quite slow, sending all of the questions will allow data to be quickly gathered.

Number of users we are aiming for:

20

Types of users our research will be targeting:

  • Mid term travellers (2-3+ months)
  • Age groups 18-30
  • People that have travelled internationally
  • People that have travelled domestically
  • People on exchange
  • Hostels
    • Occupants
    • Staff

Testing Procedure:

Preparation:

In order to eliminate any delays, all questions will be displayed on the interviewer’s laptop screen prior to the interview The google doc containing user testing data will be opened prior to the interview to document responses

Introduction:

The participant will be greeted and told the concept of Travel Pack and the purpose of this user testing Explain to the participant that they are participating in this testing activity for educational and private purposes only, and that they are able to withdraw at any time if they wish

Process:

  • Interview - the following questions will be asked to the testing participant.
    • Where have you travelled/been travelling?
    • Were you travelling alone? With a friend?
    • What struggles did you face when travelling? (E.g. language barriers or getting lost)
    • What were the solutions you used to deal with those struggles?
    • How did you find out information about the area/places to go?
    • What was the one thing you wish you had known when you were travelling in order to do/find things?
    • What was the one item you wish you had possessed when you were travelling in order to do/find things?
    • If given the opportunity, would you have been interesting in meeting other people travelling within the area?
    • Did you meet other travellers while travelling? - where did you meet them?
    • What were the difficulties you faced when making friends while travelling?
    • What kind of people would you have liked to meet?
    • What stopped you from meeting more people?
    • Any further comments?
  • Based on the response for each question, the participant will be prompted to elaborate further, or an impromptu question will be asked by the interviewer. Any impromptu questions asked will be recorded.

Closing:

  • Thank the participant for their time
  • Reiterate that their data is confidential
  • Tell them that they are free to leave

Evaluation

  • Travellers wish they had a universal sim card
  • Language barriers were the primary issue within all of our testing participants
    • This affected how they met people
  • For our younger participants, it's a lot easier for them to approach some one in a bar or club
  • We found that people tended to be more interesting people with the same attitudes and personalities as them
  • Males wanted to meet more females
  • One thing to note: A participant said the one thing they wish they knew before travelling was:
    • "If you are alone at times, you can feel lonely, especially being in a place that is temporary. I also wished that I researched a little bit more, rather than leaving to things last minute."
  • We found that a lot of people who had travelled overseas for a decent amount of time were generally outgoing
  • One participant said that they wish they could see recommendations of what to bring to certain areas (e.g. sunscreen, different clothing, etc.)
  • Most backpackers got their information by word of mouth
  • Participants wanted to meet people of the same age
